Adult Workshop: Jim Ottaviani presents:
How to Write with Pictures: Scripting Graphic Novels
Thursday, November 5, 2009, 6-9pm
Postponed until Tuesday, December 15, 2009, 6-9pm

Comic strips have been around for over a hundred years, comic books for decades, and graphic novels are now the darlings of the literary and library worlds. (OK, maybe not darlings, always, but they're no longer sniffed at and then ignored.) In this workshop we will talk about how the medium has progressed, how to tap into its particular strengths, and how to get from idea to script to an effective collaboration with artists and editors.

$60 per person per session; $50 per person per session if you register for two or more workshops. Click here to register!

The second-annual Love Hangover!
Elbow Room, 6 S. Washington in Ypsilanti
Monday, February 15, 2010, 7pm.

Join us for the second annual Love Hangover! The Love Hangover, put on locally by 826michigan and HuRAI (Huron River Arts Initiative), happens all across the country the day after Valentine’s Day. It showcases local musicians pairing in odd and unusual ways to perform love songs—originals and covers—from the divine to the bitter.

Last year, this was a staff favorite. Covers included “Stay” by Lisa Loeb, “Lovefool” by the Cardigans, and “Single Ladies” to the tune of “Blister in the Sun.”

This year includes: Tyler Brubaker, Nicole Burgess, Chrissy & Brian Deiger, Patrick Elkins, Jennifer Guerra, Jerry Hancock, Jared Hawkley, Dana Kletter, Jim Roll, AND a troupe of tap dancers, as well as members from Ghostlady, Secret Twins, and Fields of Industry.

FestiFools Robot Takeover!
Sunday, April 11, 2010, 2:30 pm, at the Ann Arbor District Library's downtown branch

Join us for our second-annual, parade-sanctioned Robot Takeover of FestiFools. This year, we're making the event even bigger and better. We've teamed up with our friends at the downtown branch of the Ann Arbor District Library to amass a veritable ARMY of bots.

How it works: Bring your bot-to-be to the library. Between 2:30 and 3:30pm, we'll have a slew of mad scientists in lab coats helping with robot assemblage. Then, at 3:30, we'll head up to Main Street, where all of our many bots (last year we could only accommodate about thirty, this year we're thinking more in terms of HUNDREDS, thanks to the library!) will infiltrate the parade, and march up and down Main with all the puppets.

Everyone is welcome at this free event! You don't have to bring anything, but any robotic supplies you happen to have would be greatly appreciated. Hope to see you at the library on Sunday, April 11, at 2:30pm.

Storymakers Dinner
Thursday, May 6, 2010, 6:30 pm, at Zingerman's Roadhouse

What could be better than a perfectly written story? At 826michigan we help young people tell and write their stories everyday, and the volunteers and donors who contribute to our work make thousands of stories possible every year. With the help of the fine people at Zingerman’s we’re throwing a big dinner party—with fabulous food and wine-- to celebrate great stories and the people that make them happen. We’ve also invited a few of our very favorite story aficionados to join us: Dave Eggers will tell tales! First year Huron High School teacher Quinn Strassel will tell us about his students and their essay-writing with our classroom volunteers! Quinn’s students will read their writing! And if that alone is not enough to have you clicking and ordering tickets right now, can we remind you that this dinner is happening at Zingerman’s? Chef Alex has crafted an extraordinary and creative menu inspired by Dave Eggers’ Zeitoun: mostly Syrian, with a touch of New Orleans Creole.

Buy tickets here!
