Part of the Team: Welcome Program Assistant Brandan Pierce!

Friends, you may not know this, but we do a LOT of work in area schools. From our regular In-School Residencies to our newly instituted Workshops Roadshows (where beloved 826michigan workshops get their turn in classrooms), we’re in public and charter schools in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Detroit every day of the week. We have a crack team of staff, interns, and volunteers to make sure that our work in schools is going smoothly and our teacher partners are happy with the program. . .but occasionally. Occasionally. Occasionally there is just too much to be done.

This is where the newest member of Team 826michigan, Brandan Pierce, comes in. For this school year, Brandan is coming on board as our Program Assistant, specifically focused on in-schools projects. If you’ve followed 826michigan for a while, you’re probably familiar with Brandan’s name and face — he was our Volunteer of the Month in December 2012, and served as our Tutoring Intern for ten wonderful months in the 2012-13 school year.

If you know Brandan, you know he is a kind and gentle presence and a great educator. What you may not know is that he is also a HUGE NERD. (We say that with love.) Brandan holds a BA in Social Studies Secondary Education from Eastern Michigan University. He did his student teaching at Slauson Middle School and has been volunteering with 826michigan since April 2012. His hobbies include feverishly watching the Detroit Red Wings, studying up on the latest Pokemon gossip, and reading graphic novel memoirs of 20-somethings living in New York City.

To welcome Brandan to 826michigan as Program Assistant, we asked him some hard-hitting questions:

Pancakes or waffles?: Pancakes by a mile.
American romantic comedies or British romantic comedies?: American. I prefer my British accents to be used by fantasy/medieval characters.
Backstreet Boys or *NSYNC?: *NSYNC. Did you see that VMA performance?
Deep Impact or Armageddon?: Armageddon because Bruce Willis.
Colored pencils or markers?: Markers.

There you have it, folks: Brandan Pierce’s take on the things that matter most in life. We’re very pleased to have Brandan with us this school year and look forward to another year of high-quality, high-energy 826michigan programs!
