Dr. Blotch has recently fired all of the ice cream scientists at 826michigan because the flavors are way too generic. Very Boring Vanilla? Spiritless Strawberry? Calm Chocolate? Blah! We can make more interesting flavors than that, right? But, problem: we don’t have any kind of fancy ice cream maker. Is there a way we can make ice cream here at 826michigan? Using the scientific method, students will design an experiment and learn the scientific process behind ice cream making. Then, we’ll see this science in action by testing these experiments and recording our observations in lab notebooks. After that, we’ll switch roles and become semi-professional ice cream taste testers, figuring out which flavors we should send to Dr. Blotch, again recording and describing our taste observations.

This workshop was adapted from “Science Club: Ice Cream!” from 826 National’s Don’t Forget to Write.
