In this workshop, we’ll look at a wide variety of graphic novel memoirs, examining how the authors choose to represent important moments from their lives, and how they bring words and pictures together to create a complete story. Then, we will brainstorm about important moments from our lives, the ones through which we learned something significant about ourselves or the world. We’ll learn some of the lingo of graphic novels and conventions that the professionals use, including dialogue, graphic weight, and special-effects lettering, and plan out our own graphic novel memoirs using a storyboard. After, we’ll become graphic novelists ourselves, designing our memoirs by hand or with an online graphic novel program. We’ll have plenty of time for planning, drawing, writing, and peer review, and we’ll conclude the second session by combining our memoirs into a group anthology of graphic novel memoirs, working together to create a title and cover for our published book.
