next season!

What can we learn from naming our feelings in music and poetry? In this hands-on workshop (ages 11+), we will practice the bravery process by engaging with the lyrics of Billie Holiday/Nina Simone as well as the poetry of Audre Lorde. We will explore what it means to survive and be honest with our voices. In the end, we will write our own “Songs or Poems for Survival”, and participate in a sharing circle.

This workshop is taught by Mariama J. Lockington, an author, nonprofit educator, and transracial adoptee who calls many places home. This workshop is in conversation with her new middle grade novel, For Black Girls Like Me, out July 30th. Mariama will be reading at Literati August 1st at 7pm in partnership with 826michigan and the Neutral Zone. Mariama is a graduate of the University of Michigan, and a former 826 National staff member.
