What does your character like to do on weekends? What are his/her friends like? What is his/her favorite board game? Marine mammal? What is his/her best kept secret? Since the main character is often the centerpiece of a story (either as the narrator or as the focal point of the action), the audience has to be interested in that character to want to read more of the story. But the character doesn’t have to be nice–in fact, the description of the character doesn’t need to be positive at all! A character’s annoying habit or the mistakes they make can be even more believable. In this workshop, we’ll build original descriptions to make fully-realized characters by using details, avoiding cliches, and thinking about how character motivations drive all other parts of a story.
