From Aristophanes in ancient Greece to Amy Schumer on Comedy Central, writers have used satire to mock and critique established cultural norms. In the first session of this workshop we will briefly examine the history of satire from the plays of Aristophanes, to Jonathan Swift’s 18th century novel Gulliver’s Travels to 1984 in the 20th century, and 21st century satire such as The Daily Show and The Onion. After reviewing examples of contemporary satire, we will discuss how satirists employ irony and humor to create argumentative writing that is often more powerful and memorable than a straightforward essay. Then students will begin writing their own satires. Students’ satires may take the form of an Onion-style article, a short story, or an SNL-style script. In the second session students will return with their writing to workshop and polish their pieces.
