Join the scientists in our lab for this series of science, math, and writing workshops, full of experiments and imagination, two important components of any scientific and literary pursuit.

“Music is just math in its best dress,” wrote Aimee Bender.

We often set writing to music, but we have fewer opportunities to explore the math behind music. Musical beats and rhythms connect to counting and series and fractions, while pitch and volume tie to more advanced math — inverse relationships and trigonometric functions! In this workshop, students can explore and discover how sounds are made. We’ll start with the key concepts and terms of the science of sound and then we’ll investigate the elegant relationship between math and music. We’ll end the day by putting our science insights into lyrics so we can share with the group, accompanied by simple melodies played on homemade, self-styled instruments.
