Do you have a protagonist in search of a plot? A plot point in search of a personality? An idea that’s gotten stuck, or an idea you accidentally buried under pages of beautiful sentences that didn’t go anywhere? In this class, students will gain new strategies for successful revision on many levels, from ruthless line-editing to wholesale re-envisioning of stalled or stale stories. We’ll use readings, discussion, and a variety of exercises to try and make our problematic pieces our most promising. All exercises can be completed with the materials provided, but students are encouraged to bring two pieces of their own writingone that’s ready for fine-tuning, and one that needs some serious help (length is flexible, from a 2-3 page excerpt up to a complete chapter or story).

Caitlin Horrocks is author of the story collection This Is Not Your City. Her stories appear in The New Yorker, The Best American Short Stories, The PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories, The Pushcart Prize, The Paris Review and elsewhere, and have won awards include the Plimpton Prize and a Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference Fellowship. She teaches at Grand Valley State University and in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College, and is the fiction editor of The Kenyon Review.

Reserve your spot in “It Lives: Revision & Re-Vision” for $25, or take advantage of our special Bring-a-Friend discount and reserve two for $40! This workshop will feature baked goods provided by Zingerman’s Deli. Proceeds from the How To Write Like I Do series benefit local nonprofit 826michigan.
