Volunteers are available to work with your student on assignments in any subject. We offer free homework help for students ages 7 to 18, from October through May in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Registration opens in mid-September and December.

What To Expect

Students bring unfinished homework or school assignments to each session and are paired with volunteers in a safe, supportive, learning environment. Through individualized support, students strengthen their academic engagement. The individualized attention of volunteers improves students’ self confidence and encourages them to be socially invested in a community of learning.

This is a homework-based program. If you’re interested in participating in 826michigan programs, but your student does not have homework regularly, please check out our After-School Writing Lab.

Is this program a good fit for my student?

This program will be a good fit for your student if they have regular homework or school assignments and find that they are wanting a bit of extra support with understanding their work. Our program is designed to support your student with existing homework in any subject area–we do not have our own curriculum that we teach to students in this program. We also have a daily writing activity that students are encouraged to complete when they finish their homework. Many of our past students have even published the writing that they’ve worked on during the program!

How often do we have to attend? Can my student attend part of a session?

This program requires students to attend their full scheduled session each week from October 3 (or time of registration) through December 13, 2022. We have very limited spots available in the program this semester–we ask that you consider whether you can make this commitment in your schedule before you register. If your student misses more than two sessions for reasons that are not COVID-19 related, we will discuss whether your student is able to continue their spot in the program. We anticipate a long waitlist and want to make sure that we are able to work with as many students as possible. Thank you for your help with this!

What is the program like?

On your student’s first day of the program, we will provide a short orientation to help them feel familiar with our space and materials, the tutor that they will be working with, and our community agreements. We try to pair each student with a tutor who has experience in the subject area that they are working on. The final fifteen minutes of each session will be reserved for announcements, community-building, packing up, and distributing a snack to take home. We strive to make our tutoring community student-centered, and value students and families as important partners in education. If you have any suggestions, preferences, or ideas for your student’s experience or our program as a whole, please let us know.

Who are the tutors?

Tutors
All of our tutors are background checked, and go through three hours of training before their work with students. All tutors are eager and excited to work with your student, and many of them have previous experience tutoring or working with children. Many of our tutors are students at the University of Michigan or Eastern Michigan University who are volunteering as a part of a class. Some tutors are retired teachers, or professionals in the community. Some tutors are exploring a career change and volunteer with us to gain experience in the field of education.

Staff
Our Program Manager, Megan Gilson, has been involved with 826michigan for over nine years, beginning as a volunteer before joining the staff in 2016. Megan has a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Education from Harvard University, where her studies focused on language and literacy education for K-12 students. She holds secondary English and Psychology teacher licensure in the State of Michigan, and brings her experience as a former classroom teacher in Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor to support student learning in 826michigan’s after-school programs.

Do you offer online homework support?

At this time, our After-school Tutoring program is only offered in person. If you would like to participate in an online program, please check out our After-school Writing Lab and Drop-in Writing for Wee-bots.
