Super-Amazing College Entrance and Scholarship Essay Writing Workshop (With Pizza!)
Led by Will Purves
College Applicants and Scholarship writers (HS Juniors & Seniors), 20 students
Saturday, October 8: 10am-4pm (one session with an optional follow-up session on Thursday, October 13: 6-7:30pm)

So, you’re applying to college? Thinking about scholarships? You probably need to write an essay (or 2 or 6 or more). This workshop will take you from the blank page to the finished draft. You will work with a tutor, participate in brainstorming exercises, analyze successful essays and write. The goal: to leave with a draft (or drafts) you feel good about submitting or reviewing with your parents, college counselor, or English teacher. The cool thing is that about a week later, you will have a chance to come back to work on another draft or re-tool an essay for a different school or scholarship, all with a tutor!

Different schools require different essays, from those on the Common Application to supplemental pieces, to particular topics at certain schools or for scholarships. It will help a great deal if you have a list (even if it is a long one or is incomplete) of the written requirements and questions/topics of the colleges you are contemplating. 826michigan will also provide you with information about the ScholarMatch program and the essay you write can be used to help you build a ScholarMatch profile.

When you sign up, please indicate whether you have a laptop you can bring to the workshop; if not we will arrange to have a computer at 826 for your use. Did we mention that lunch is included?

Will Purves is a local writer, educator, and teacher who has worked with tests and test-takers, essay writers, and aspiring writers for many years. He is an experienced test, essay, and writing coach and has worked with 826 as a workshop leader and tutor and was honored as Volunteer of the Month in November 2010. He enjoys helping students figure out their test-taking strengths and coming up with strategies that make the experience more successful (and more bearable!). He also really wants you to get into the college of your choice!
