September Volunteer of the Month

September 6, 2022 | Volunteer of the Month

Kaitlyn W. began volunteering with 826michigan this spring and contributed hundreds of hours toward our programs behind the scenes and with students this summer. It was a huge, amazing, and wonderful gift to have Kaitlyn’s consistent support throughout the summer. Plus, it was a lot of fun to have her on our team as she worked with students in-person for field trips on Eastern Michigan University’s campus, virtually with Wee-bots, and virtually with Summer Writers Clubs. Kaitlyn is a flexible initiative-taker who thoughtfully creates great experiences for students. She carefully guides groups of students, offers warm feedback, and makes sure students know that she sees and hears them. All of these qualities make us extra  excited for Kaitlyn to be entering the field of education and will be  a student teacher this fall. We  wish her the very best with her second-grade students!

Favorite 826michigan memory?
Having students who spoke various languages say thank you from their home language. Also, having a student read me their story in a different language and then I helped them with doing it again in English.

Tell the world a little bit about your 826michigan volunteering so far:
I would have to say interacting with the children in person for the field trips and the writers club with Kinyel have been super fun seeing children stretch and explore!

What advice do you have for future volunteers?
To have fun and give it your best shot! And do not forget that these students we work with are our future!
