Who Doesn't Need an Unusual and Inspiring Monday Night Once in a While?

Certainly by now you’ve heard tell of our upcoming event entitled Five Bowls of Oatmeal. The concept is — as you, I hope, expect from us — simple and clever. Over the summer, we offered a workshop called “Me: Want to Write a Play? You: Yes, With All My Heart. Me: Excellent.” You may not be surprised to find that the participants wrote short plays. Students write short plays here at 826michigan fairly frequently. But THESE students will get to see their plays performed by real, live, professional, *actual* actors next week.

Can you imagine being eleven years old, writing a play over the summer, and then seeing professional actors perform it for a full house? I cannot. But I CAN — and here’s where you come in too — help to supply said full house. Because the effects of such an event on the creativity of one of the young people involved is directly proportional to the number of hands clapping, the number of people whooping, and, to be sure, the number of bottoms in seats.

Would you like to be one of those bottoms? Sure, it’s all well and good to be supportive of what our students are doing from afar. But occasionally, we call upon you to army up and SHOW, literally, your support.

Here are some facts you might not know about Five Bowls of Oatmeal:

  • It happens Monday, 11/22 at 7:30pm at the Mendelssohn Theater in Ann Arbor.
  • ALL of the $15 it costs benefits our free students programming.
  • You can get tickets here.
  • It’s family friendly.
  • It promises to be a hilarious and unique Monday night, and who doesn’t need one of those once in a while?

Many thanks to the amazing and talented Anne Heintz, who spearheaded the workshop. Thanks also to Jacqui Robbins and Lauren London, two 826 board members without whom this just could not have happened. BIG UPS to Jeopardy! Champion and 826michigan Development Assistant Amy Wilson who, in addition to walking around with fabulous hair all the time, spent countless hours putting everything together.

And shout outs to our sponsors: The Penny Seats Theater Company, Above the Treeline, University Office Technologies, Sava’s, and Kroger! Thank you!

Hope to see you there on Monday!
